Cosmetic surgery is a form of medical operation that is intended to enhance a person’s physical features. In the traditional Korea society, people believed that tampering with one’s body was not only a violation of Confucian values, but also was a way of showing dishonor to one’s parents’. However, nowadays, it is not uncommon to walk the streets of Gangnam and see various advertisements promoting hospitals that perform cosmetic surgery. In fact, the act of receiving cosmetic surgery is so common in South Korea these days, that some do not even consider a double-eyelid surgery to be part of plastic surgery anymore. According to statistics conducted by the Seoul city government in 2010, 31.5 percent of residents that were 15 or older, were willing to go under the knife to improve their looks. Also, in a 2008 research conducted by the Seoul-based ARA Consulting, an estimated 30 percent of Korean women aged 20 to 50, or some 2.4 million women, had received cosmetic procedures, with many having received more than one procedure.
